The Youth Services Section features a special collection of Coretta Scott King Award books and the Ashley Bryan Art Collection from illustrators of African Descent. The 60,000 square-foot Center serves as a repository of materials related to the local, national, and international voices of the African diaspora with more than 85,000 books, manuscripts, artifacts, framed art, print, photography, audiovisual, and documents held in our Adult Services Section and Special Collections. Opening to the public on October 26, 2002, AARLCC became the third public library of its kind in the United States dedicated to the study of Black history and culture. Day 1: Celebration Of Kwanzaa UMOJA (Unity) Dr. Kwanzaa has seven symbols including Mazao, Mkeka, Vibunzi, Mishumoa Saba, Kinara. It has a black candle in the middle with three green candles on the left and three red candles on the right. ![]() The candle holder of Kwanzaa is called a kinara. The Broward County African American Research Library and Cultural Center (AARLCC) is located in the Sistrunk community, one of the oldest historically Black communities named for one of Fort Lauderdale’s first Black physicians. Kwanzaa is seven days long and on each day a candle is lit and one of the seven principles are discussed. This year's festival will coincide with the first day of Kwanzaa which encourages Umoja, or 'Unity'. Kwanzaa (/ˈkwɑːn.zə/) is an annual celebration of African American culture that is held from December 26 to January 1. Followed by presentations that include the history of Kwanzaa, West African Dance, How to set up your Kwanzaa table, and a discussion on Kwanzaa. Each year, December 26th marks the beginning of the seven-night celebration.
